As homecoming season approaches, the Strake Jesuit community embraces an initiative that honors tradition while prioritizing service.
Mums for Others is a nonprofit initiative founded by the Strake Jesuit Mother’s Club in collaboration with the Strake Jesuit House Council. Its mission is to embrace the cherished Texas tradition of homecoming mums while redirecting the focus towards community service, reflecting on the school’s commitment to developing Men for Others.
When talking to House Council member Peter Hablinski ‘26, he states that this program aims to provide beautifully crafted, yet more affordable, mums, ensuring that the excitement of homecoming doesn’t come at an excessive cost. Peter shared his insights about how homecoming has become increasingly centered around lavish celebrations, which can sometimes overshadow the deeper values of community and service that are central to the Jesuit mission.
Mums for Others addresses this by donating all proceeds to Strake Jesuit’s Financial Aid, as well as charitable organizations, allowing students and their families to participate in a beloved tradition while giving back to the community. It is an opportunity to celebrate homecoming in a way that aligns with the ideals of servant leadership and moral development emphasized at Strake Jesuit.
This year, Mums for Others is poised to make a meaningful impact during homecoming week. By participating, we honor our school’s mission while enjoying the festivities, creating a sense of community that truly reflects Strake Jesuit’s mission of Men for Others.
