Summer at SJ

Debate Camp

ABOUT THE CAMP
We will offer training in two types of debate: Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum. For each, we will have two levels of labs: one lab for the beginner or less experienced, and one for the intermediate/more experienced debater (including beginners who attended last year). If you attended last year and found the camp to be a useful and positive experience, come back for more advanced training.

We served 200+ aspiring debaters last summer. Join us!

  • What will be accomplished at Debate Camp?

The goals of Debate Camp are as follows:
    • To train dedicated, serious debaters who can’t afford the thousands of dollars for a national camp.
    • To create a cadre of well-trained local debaters who can share their skills with their teammates and raise the level of local circuit debate.
    • To allow our best and brightest to develop to their full potential.
  • When and where will Debate Camp take place?

Dates: Monday, June 23rd – Thursday, July 3rd
Schedule: Weekdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Location: 8900 Bellaire Blvd., Houston TX 77036
Camp Fee: $700.00 (we offer a limited number of need-based scholarships — contact Mr. Scheller for information)
  • Who should attend Debate Camp?

Incoming SJ freshmen or other SJ beginning debaters who want to get a head start on their preparation for competition, or just want to get a sense of what high school debate is all about.

Rising seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-grade girls or boys who want to learn the basics of successful competitive debate.
  • Who will be the instructors?

Mr. Murvin Auzenne, Mr. Jerry Crist, and Mr. Brock Scheller will be camp co-coordinators and chief instructors. Together, they coach the Strake Jesuit College Preparatory Debate Team. They have helped coach top National debaters: the 2024 TOC Finalist in LD; the 2021 TOC Champion in LD; TFA state champions in 2006, 2008, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024; the 2008 NFL National Champion in LD; and numerous other top state and national debaters.
